Castello di Meleto

That of Meleto is a majestic Chianti castle, its origin dates back to at least the 11th century when it was owned by the monks of the nearby Badia a Coltibuono. It later became a fief of the Firidolfi family. It had the nature of a military outpost, involved in the dispute over the Chianti land between Florence and Siena; for this it has also suffered attacks and damages. Finally it was transformed into a residential villa owned by the Ricasoli family until the late 1960s.

Today Castello di Meleto is an independent agricultural and hospitality company with 1400 hectares of land around the castle; it belongs to the Società Viticola Toscana, a widely held company with 1600 shareholders. The renovated castle has become a beautiful resort and has a considerable vineyard made up of several plots in the township of Gaiole in Chianti.
Since the 2000s the wines of Castello di Meleto have emerged demonstrating a great personality. The winery can diversify production thanks to the variety of vineyards, located in the areas of Casi, Poggiarso, Mori, San Piero and Meleto, all within the township of Gaiole in Chianti.
Obviously the Chianti Classico, in all its types, has the most important role, but the range also includes other wines, reds, whites and sparkling wines. The style of the wines is traditional and perfectly represents the Gaiole terroir. The winery is converting to organic. It produces about 700,000 bottles a year.
