Attems

Attems has been rooted in the Collio for almost 1000 years and Count Douglas Attems was one of the main proponents of the Consortium of Collio wines in 1964, the third in Italy. Since 2000 Attems belongs to the Tuscan Marchesi Frescobaldi.
The estate extends into the hills in the province of Gorizia for over 70 hectares in total, of which 44 are vineyards. In particular, the vineyards are located on terraced slopes facing south. The mountains to the north shelter this area from the cold alpine winds and also from the Bora that blows from Trieste. The southern exposure to the nearby Adriatic Sea guarantees many hours of direct sunlight and reflected on the vineyards, essential for the ripening of the grapes thanks to chlorophyll photosynthesis. Another characteristic of the microclimate are the temperature variations both between the seasons and between day and night.
The soils are different depending on the area. In the Collio hills the sedimentary soil called “Ponca” prevails: a typical ancient marine formation consisting of stratification of calcareous marl and sandstone. In the Isonzo Valley, on the other hand, the soils are alluvial with sands and clays mixed with pebbles. Finally, in the intermediate vineyards a well-drained loamy soil prevails. The white grape varieties typical of Friuli-Venezia Giulia are grown in these vineyards, such as Ribolla giallo, Sauvignon blanc, Pinot grigio and Chardonnay.

The winery works with the aim of producing traditional wines, linked to the territory of origin. Modern technologies are used that make it possible to limit contact with oxygen in the various stages of processing to maintain the purity and precision of the perfumes as much as possible.
