Primitivo Rifugio 2022

The Rifugio red wine is a pure Primitivo with a fruity and round character and great balance. The grapes come from the village of Veglie in the province of Lecce, the soil of the vineyards has alluvial origins and has a considerable presence of whte limestone and in some places even reddish color due to the presence of iron oxides. This land is ideal for the cultivation of Primitivo vines and for the production of wines of great character. The vineyard is modern, with spurred cordon and high planting density (over 5000 plants per hectare). The name of the wine refers to a refuge used in the past to protect oneself from the raids of the Saracens; this refuge was so important and well-known that it became a real geographical toponym.

The grapes are de-stemmed and crushed and the alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature with 12 days of skin contact. After racking, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation. Finally, the wine ages for 12 months partly in large oak barrels of 30 hectoliters and partly in vitrified concrete tanks.
