Vignamaggio

Located on the right bank of the Greve Valley Vignamaggio is an important Chianti Classico winery with 70 ha of vineyards and a wine production of 200,000 bottles per year; its current wine story started in the 90s with innovative wines from Cabernet franc and Cabernet sauvignon. The Villa Vignamaggio was founded in the 1300s by the Florentine Gherardini family, that is the family of Mona Lisa, portrayed in Leonardo da Vinci's Gioconda. Over the centuries it has been an important noble palace and an agricultural farm with vineyards, olive groves and other crops. The modern wine production, as we know it, is due to the lawyer Gianni Nunziante. Vignamaggio was on sale in the 1980s and he visited it with the aim to sell it to one of his customers, but he fell in love with it and bought it. He hired a great winemaker such as Franco Bernabei, who discovered that in the vineyard there were old Cabernet sauvignon and Cabernet franc plants, which had been planted by the previous owner. Since 2014 Vignamaggio has belonged to the architect Patrice Taravella, who continues its tradition by further developing the wine business.
Vignamaggio was also a film set, chosen for the film “Much Ado About Nothing” inspired by Shakespeare's comedy.
The vineyards today extend on both sides of the Greve valley with different geological and microclimatic conditions. The winery processes only with its own grapes and is certified organic. The oenologist Barbara Tamburini supervises the operations in the cellars.
