Tenuta San Leonardo is one of the main private wineries in Trentino, located between the cities of Trento and Verona along the Adige valley. It belongs to the noble Guerrieri Gonzaga family and is steeped in Italian history. It used to produce wines for the Austro-Hungarian court, which were based on French varieties that have been grown here for long times.
Today the winery is run by Anselmo Guerrieri Gonzaga. His father Carlo had worked as an oenologist at Tenuta San Guido, where Sassicaia was born. Here he met the oenologist of Sassicaia, Giacomo Tachis, who has been a consultant for Tenuta San Leonardo for 15 years. Another great winemaker has succeeded him since 2000: Carlo Ferrini.
The vineyards are surrounded by mountains, which affect the climate and the kind of soil, mainly of alluvial origin. The microclimate is also affected by the mild influence of the nearby Lake Garda and by the protection of the mountains.
The generation currently at the helm of the winery has made an important turning point towards organic and sustainable agriculture, obtaining an important certification on biodiversity San Leonardo wines are classics of Trentino wine scene, appreciated by critics and guides from all over the world. Their San Leonardo red wine, produced since 1982, is considered one of the best Bordeaux blended wines made in northern Italy.
