Philipponnat

Two things are remembered above all about the Philipponnat maison. The first is his seniority, as it is rooted in the Champagne region since the sixteenth century, when the family already cultivated vineyards and still today a descendant of the Philipponnat family, sixteenth generation, manages the business; the second is the fact of owning one of the best vineyards in the whole region: the Clos des Goisses.

The Champagne house we know today was founded by Pierre Philipponnat in 1910 in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, later managed by his nephew Charles Philipponnnat, to whom we owe the success. Since 1997 the maison has been acquired by the Lanson-BCC group, but has remained autonomous in terms of production and style and is still led by Charles. Philipponnat owns 20 hectares of vineyards, but also buys a lot of grapes from others to produce around 600,000 bottles a year. The Clos des Goisses vineyard, for which Philipponnat is always remembered, consists of a plot of 5.5 hectares facing south, steeply sloping with chalky soil and enjoying an exceptionally warm microclimate. It was bought by Pierre Philipponnat in 1935 and immediately gave life to a label of its own: a single-vineyard Champagne, which was unusual at the time. Since then it has almost always been produced, skipping only 12 vintages. It is considered the most suitable cru of the region, the Romané-Conti of Champagne.

Philipponat Champagnes are excellent from a technical point of view and have a clear identity, they are always balanced. In the blends Pinot noir usually prevails and base wines are partially evolved in wood; the malolactic fermentation is rarely carried out and the aging on the lees in the bottle are very long, from 3 to 11 years. The range includes various labels, starting from non-vintage, available in both brut and pas dosé versions.
