Niepoort is a historic producer of the Douro Valley, founded in 1842 by Dutch immigrants. Today the fifth generation of the Niepoort family runs the business and owns several estates in the region, although since they have always used to buy grapes from third parties to produce a large quantity of Port and red and white wines. As tradition dictates, Nieeport makes wine in the so-called “Quintas” in the Douro valley near the vineyards, but then sends the wines by river to Vila Nova de Gaia, on the coast, where aging and blending take place.
In Vila Nova de Gaia there are the headquarters as well as the warehouses and aging cellars of the whole Porto benefiting from a cooler climate than that of the interior.
Here Port is bottled and shipped all over the world. Nieport today produces a large amount of Porto labels of all types, from the younger Ruby and Tawny to Vintage and LBV (Late Bottled Vintage). They also produce traditional Douro white and red wines with an excellent reputation.
