Le Terrazze dell’Etna
The winery was founded in 2008 thanks to the initiative of the Sicilian entrepreneur Nino Bevilacqua following the success of Etna wines on Italian and foreign markets. The company takes its name from the conformation of the vineyards in the shape of natural terraces overlooking the sea of the Aeolian Islands almost like an amphitheater on the northern slope of the volcano cone. The company headquarters is in Bocca d’Orzo in the municipality of Randazzo and the vineyards extend to a high altitude: from 600 to 950 meters; here the tenacious work of farmers over the years has snatched these beautiful vineyard terraces from the destructive activity of the volcano. As a good entrepreneur Nino Bevilacqua hired one of the most famous Italian oenologists such as Riccardo Cotarella and in addition to the native Etna vine varieties, he also planted Chardonnay, Pinot nero and Petit verdot. The oldest vineyards are bush-trained and there are vines over 60 years old. The soils are dark, old lava flows that over time have turned into hard rocks and with erosion into black powder. It is draining soil rich in minerals. The production includes still wines and traditional-method sparkling wines, in all 120,000 bottles a year.
