Grattamacco

Grattamacco winery is one of the founders of Bolgheri's modern wines. The winery was founded in 1977 by Pier Mario Meletti Cavallari, who had moved from Bergamo to Bolgheri after a career as a manager. The cellar and the vineyards are distinguished by the hilly position in the south-eastern sector of the appellation between 100 and 200 meters above sea level. Not only are the Grattamacco vineyards higher than the average of the Bolgheri vineyard, but also their exposure is different: facing the hills rather than the sea, thus ensuring cooler climatic conditions.
The winery has always been little interventionist and even after the change of ownership in 2002 - when it was bought by Claudio Tipa, former owner of Collemassari - the style remained faithful to that imposed by the founder. The alcoholic fermentation of red wines occurs mostly in conical wooden vats with natural yeasts and the malolactic fermentation takes place in barriques, in which the wines continue aging.
Grattamacco is one of the few in Bolgheri to maintain a share of Sangiovese in the blend of its wines, with an original and territorial interpretation of the Bordeaux model, which had been imported to Bolgheri by Tenuta San Guido and followed by all the wineries that have sprung up later.
Today Grattamacco owns 25 hectares, some even far from the company headquarters; all are managed with certified organic agriculture. The annual production is 150,000 bottles.
